Training Simulators: Radio Communications Trainer

H Scientific supplied the Radio Communications Trainer at HMS Collingwood.

The Radio Communications Trainer allows students to learn intercommunications skills without an instructor being directly involved. Students report on the unfolding scenario displayed on the radar screen. The computer responds to each voice input in real time and replaces the instructor with voice recognition technology for much of the lesson. Instructors monitor student progress remotely over the networked system, allowing students the freedom to learn at their own pace and the instructor time to focus on those who require extra assistance.

The Trainer provides full management tools for classes, practice sessions, training and exams, including battlespace editing tools for creation and editing of scenarios. Targets can appear to the student in 'real-time', with aircraft or missile approaching at realistic speeds as they would in a battle situation. Questions for the student can be added as the scenario is assembled. These lesson scenarios can then be saved into a database. For the student this means that they can work at their own pace and with immediate notification of correct response or error. The generic picture and tote information presented is representative of a ship's command system picture and interaction with the screen is via a trackball and 'push-to-talk' headset as it would be on board ship.

System benefits:

  • Networked classrooms with instructor 'snoop' facility,
  • Realistic RADAR displays with full tactical scenarios,
  • Voice and displayed response to student voice input,
  • Scenario generator for lesson creation,
  • Surface, sub-surface, aircraft, helicopter and missile targets,
  • Full scenario creation and editing tools,
  • Library of lesson scenarios,
  • Student database with exams and work history,
  • Voice intercom between students and instructor,
  • Real GFE 'push to talk' headsets,
  • PC environment for high reliability and low cost.

The Radio Communications Trainer may be adapted for any procedural based training of structured voice reporting.
