Ship Sim 2 has drawn extensively on software advances in the computer gaming industry, and offers the user a 3D outside view, with or without an additional plan view window. It is suited for use in a full featured simulation-based training role.

Ship Sim 2 includes:
- Realistic 3-D view of situation,
- Plan view,
- Photo-realistic instrument consoles (touch screen technology),
- Dual display support,
- Multiple ships
- own-ship controlled by user
- other ships follow prescribed or pre-recorded routes, or are controlled by other users
- Ship interactions - ship-ship, shallow water, channel effects,
- Land masses, mountains, quays, open pile jetties,
- Buildings, bridges,
- Buoys, including flashing light sequences,
- Visibility control - fog and day/night,
- Navigation lights,
- Sound effects,
- Voice communications,
- Joystick or realistic control levers/yokes,
- Classroom set-up
- Networking with instructor workstation(s)
- Instructor view shows summary of students performance
- Allows students scenarios to be changed, e.g. change in wind/tide
- Allows addition of extra vessels
- Allows introduction of faults, e.g. steering fault or gyro failure
- Supports ISO 16329, 11674 standards for autopilot accreditation,
- Simulates roll and pitch for added realism.
