The Helmsman Training Simulator is a computer based ship simulation
which teaches students how to control a ship of any size and under
any environmental condition. The system utilises a PC network
and Windows operating system to offer an affordable and reliable
solution for the classroom.
The Helmsman Trainer is configurable for almost any ship type.
The instrument console is built up using photographs of real ships
instruments, with a layout matched to each particular ship. New
instrument panels can be constructed using our extensive library
of real ships instruments, or created from photographs. Using
dual touch-screens, it is possible reproduce a wide range of ships
with high fidelity.
In a classroom situation, the system allows an instructor to
prepare, launch and control scenarios for each student. The instructor's
summary window shows key dynamic data for all students, and allows
the instructor to view any student scenario and intervene for
example, injecting another target ship, or introducing an engine
or steering fault or a gyro failure. All student sessions are
fully recorded, including voice comms (via headsets) and may be
replayed for debriefing purposes. A 3-D scenario generator is
provided as part of the package, giving customers total flexibility
and independence to build, and store for future years, any created
situation or lesson. The Helmsman Trainer can be interfaced to
ARPA radar trainers and to ECDIS instruments.
The picture shows the student position. Each student is provided
with a realistic yoke and throttle, with bridge instruments replicated
on a touch screen display. Customers may choose to have one or
two touch displays. A further display shows the outside picture,
either from above the ship, or as seen from the bridge. Up to
30 student positions can be configured in a classroom, networked
with the instructor.
The system may also be operated on a stand-alone basis, for personal
training.
The Helmsmen Trainer has been reviewed by the UK Maritime and
Coastguard Agency (see News).
