About Us

The Company

H Scientific Ltd was formed in 1996 and is located near Portsmouth on the South Coast of England, UK. Our areas of expertise include:

Dynamic simulation

Autopilot technology

Navigational instruments and telemetry systems

Our principal activities include the development of innovative technology for marine and submarine fields; we apply this technology to provide our clients with solutions, ranging from installing simulation-based training systems to developing and installing the autopilot controller 'heart' of an autonomous vehicle and carrying out sea trials.

Dynamic simulation has formed the basis for the development of advanced techniques for navigation and position control. A suite of self-tuning autopilots have been developed and trialled at sea on a range of vehicles. A dedicated Mission Controller board has been developed jointly with one of our key partners and is being marketed for remote control of surface and subsurface ROVs and AUVs. The core self-tuning heading autopilot has been licensed to a major autopilot manufacturer for the leisure marine market.

H Scientific has become one of the leaders in the field of ship simulation in support of the development, testing and accreditation of the ship control systems with the world's only off-the-shelf simulator supporting the ISO11674, ISO16329 and IEC62065 standards for heading and track control systems. H Scientific authored the IEC62065 mathematical model.

H Scientific have developed a new generation of simulators for training in navigation, ship handling and helmsmanship. Training systems have been supplied to the UK Royal Navy for training in submarine blind pilotage, helmsman training and radio communications training. The Helmsman Trainer has been recognised by the UK Maritime Coastguard Agency as offering real benefits for training. Our current generation of training products support cross-network operation; high quality graphics; voice comms; photo-realistic instrument displays; multiple ships; channel effects; berthing; navigation lights and buoys; sea state; wind; tide; visibility.

In the navigational instrument field, we have developed a Diver Navigation Unit which comprises a suite of navigational sensors and an embedded PC board, providing the diver with position information even when submerged. We have also developed and successfully sea-trialed a velocity sensor aimed specifically for the submarine application. This is a sonar imaging sensor which measures velocity over ground and is fundamentally more accurate than existing techniques at low speeds. Building on the experience of autopilot hardware, we have developed a flexible and powerful telemetry board with a wide range of applications.

Our staff are drawn from a wide range of Physics, Engineering and I.T. backgrounds and work closely with our clients to ensure project success and client satisfaction.

Corporate Alliances

H Scientific Ltd's corporate strategy is to form alliances with key institutions and companies. We have alliances in several European countries as well as the UK and Washington DC, USA. Through these alliances we have combined our expertise with that of our partners, offering them significant technological advantages and gaining access to new markets. More information is included in the News pages and some examples of successful collaborations are listed below:

  • Raymarine (UK): A strategic partnership was formed with Raymarine in 2000, encompassing H Scientific's self-tuning autopilot algorithms and advanced compass stabilisation algorithms. Combining H Scientific's mathematical expertise with Raymarine's experience in product engineering and access to market, the partnership has been able to develop a world-class product that out-performs its rivals in all types of boat and in all sea-states.
  • Chelsea Technologies Group (UK): Chelsea Technologies have been closely associated with H Scientific since 1997 when H Scientific sought a partner to develop COVELIA, a new concept in Correlation Velocity Logs. The partnership programme was so successful that H Scientific and Chelsea Technologies went on to develop the 3DMC (Spectre) processor board autopilot and mission controller.
  • Allied Marine Services Inc. (USA): H Scientific has a long standing partnership with AMS in Alexandria, Virgina, to develop and support products for the US commercial and military markets.
  • H Scientific Inc. (USA): H Scientific, Inc. is a new company that has been established in Maryland, USA with the express purpose of promoting and supporting the H Scientific range of products and technology in North and South America. See www.hscientific.com for more information.
  • Anteon Corporation (USA): H Scientific has formed an alliance with Anteon Corporation following a project to supply navigation and autopilot control for the Sea Shadow Diver Propulsion Vehicle.
  • BAE Systems (UK): H Scientific developed the autopilot used on the Talisman vehicle and is involved in ongoing autopilot projects.
  • Ultra Electronics (UK): H Scientific and Ultra Electronics are working together to develop, market and distribute the training simulator products.
